Menopause is often considered to be the period of years after menses has ceased, however it is actually the moment when menses ceases. Perimenopause is the short period of time leading up to menopause and the years after are called the post-menopausal years. All of these times for women can be extremely rich in learning, growth and enlightenment if allowed to be so. Though age, in today’s fast-paced and often artificial world is a factor in each of these, in ancient times, it was not so much.
In American society today, women have largely been raised to believe since childhood that menses is dirty and ugly and something to abhor. Many women actually look forward to menopause when they can be relieved of the monthly inconvenience, discomfort and pain. And of course, if we simply accept what has been programmed into us about these monthly events, it’s all too natural that we would want it to end as soon as possible.

In Eckhart Tolle’s The Power of Now, he states:
Tolle explains that because women are feeling beings they tap into the pain-body of the collective female consciousness and not just their own pain-body created by hurts and traumas of the past. The pain-body has an extremely powerful energetic charge that can pull us into unconscious identification with it. During menses and perimenopause women can actually choose to either identify with the pain or more consciously tune in to the potent opportunity it presents to transmute the pain experienced on all levels—not just the physical—into the wisdom of enlightenment.
Instead of finding these phases to be miserable and nuisances, women can understand that these are gateways to the liberation of their spirit. Tolle says:
When we realize that we have an attachment to the pain-body, in that moment we break the attachment and are on our way to evolving experiences that we turn into experiences that are more positive in nature. Life becomes a bit easier and certainly more beautiful. We can use menses and perimenopause as vehicles for transporting us out of suffering and into light and the incredible wisdom of the post-menopausal or wise woman.
Finally, Tolle tells us that the main task of women is to transmute the pain-body which has so far been coming between us and our true inner selves. He cautions that we women still have to deal with one other obstacle to enlightenment and that is the thinking mind. Here again, we can use the pain-body we experience and our intense presence to it during menses and perimenopause to actually begin to free us from the nagging destructive ego mind.
